ABANDONMENT
Love is patient and kind…
As I sit to write about abandonment, I prayed and asked for a scripture. I find it interesting that I opened my Bible to 1 Corinthians 13, “Love is patient and kind.” Which is odd because I want to write about something so polar opposite.
Polarity. Opposite ends of the spectrum… Love… Loneliness. I guess you must experience both ends of the spectrum to truly appreciate both viewpoints. Without abandonment, I wouldn’t yearn for love.
I didn’t realize it until recently, but abandonment has been a theme in my life. The definition, according to the Merriam- Webster dictionary, is “to withdraw protection, support, or help from.” I’ve been abandoned by all the men in my life. Whether it’s been emotional or physical abandonment, there’s an underlying theme going on.
Deep down, I fear that if I get close to a man, it will trigger me to be closed off because I know the pattern… “I love equals I get abandoned.”
I want to break this pattern. The scripture says “love is patient, love is kind” and this is how I’m trying to live my life. Although I don’t know how much more patient I can be, I do know every act of kindness is inching me closer to my reward of love.
Everyone has encountered some sort of abandonment. This could be from birth… maybe you were adopted or pushed away by your parents to fend for yourself as a child, abandoned by your spouse, or even abandoned by your children.
When in the physical you are abandoned, that hardship allows you the opportunity to draw near to the love of yourself, and to God. God is ultimately your protector, your supporter, your helper. That’s the contrast in all this… finding love and the blueprint is right here in this scripture:
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and keeps no record of being wrong. It does not rejoice about injustice, but rejoices, whenever the truth wins out. Love, never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance”
